Phase 2
Summary
Theologians interested in expanding their understanding of the psychological sciences by working with psychology faculty are invited to apply to receive training in a research lab environment. Theologians will be paired with psychology mentors of their choosing. Mentors will meet with their theologians at least twice a month, and theologians will participate in their mentor’s lab for approximately half a year, learning alongside grad students, post-docs, and research staff. With this practical experience, not only will theologians be better consumers of psychological science (e.g., evaluate design/methodology decisions of studies), but they will also be better prepared to engage psychological collaborators through recognition of the challenges and trade-offs that are always required in empirical inquiry. Participants will be eligible to apply for an additional $30,000 of salary funding over a year and $5,000-40,000 for a collaborative empirical study with a psychology lab in Phase 3.
Deadline for Applications
March 1, 2024
Timeline and Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials:
- An up to 2,000-word document (references do not count toward the total) explaining why they want to advance to Phase 2 of the cross-training. The document should include: an updated description of how their theological questions are aligned with the research themes, name(s) and letters indicating willingness to partner of 1-4 psychologists with whom they would want to work for the scholar-in-lab-residency training (geographically near highly recommended), the particular questions the psychology lab would help them address, topic/synopsis of the paper they would author, and learning objectives for the training. The document may also indicate how the scholar’s work addresses the needs of an underserved population and/or contributes to diversity, equity, and inclusion. If the proposed training lab is not geographically near the theologian, evidence for remote participation feasibility should be submitted (e.g., explanation of how the lab has successfully conducted remote collaboration previously, plan for the remote engagement, etc.).
- A 250-word executive summary of the scholars’ proposal.
- Updated CV of the scholar and short bio (<200 words) for posting on a website.
- Approval of the relevant university signing officials.
- Optional: CVs of any psychologists with whom you want to engage training who were not previously involved in the project.
- For non-Baylor faculty, a detailed budget spreadsheet (template provided), specifying up to $15,000 in salary, fringe, and overhead costs toward 1 course buyout or the equivalent. Overhead is limited to 15%.
Applications must be submitted by email attachment to crosstraining@baylor.edu. The words “Phase 2 - Cross-Training Application” should appear in the email subject line. The only acceptable file formats are .doc and PDF. Questions about applications can be sent to the submission address. Proposals must be received no later than March 1, 2023, at midnight Pacific Time. An acknowledgement email will be sent within seven days of receiving the materials.
Only applicants who participated in Phase 1 of the grant are eligible to apply. Criteria for proposal review will include the following: potential impact, fit with program aims, likelihood for successful collaboration with psychologists, creativity/novelty of work, and addresses the needs of an underserved population. All applications must be submitted in English and all payments will be made in US dollars.
The grantee receiving the award will commit to the following:
1) Submit a scholar-in-lab-residency plan outlining the learning objectives and training experiences projected for the training period, due June 1, 2024.
2) Submit a scholar-in-lab-residency training report narrating the activities engaged and evaluating the extent to which learning objectives were met, due December 31, 2024.
3) Theologians will first author (and psychologists will likely co-author) a scholarly article for peer-review articulating how psychological science can inform a theological question(s). A draft of this manuscript should be submitted with the training report on December 31, 2024. An updated version of the manuscript that is under peer-review should be submitted October 1, 2025. Authors will commit to self-archiving pre-prints of articles once they accepted for publication.
4) (Optional) For teams that wish to conduct a study in Phase 3, submit a research proposal.
